Creating a Poem from Scratch

Creating a Poem from Scratch

This is something I have done with children in key stage two but it can be done with any age group. I sometimes call it the ‘furniture game’ because I often use a piece of furniture as the starting point.

  1. So imagine someone as a piece of furniture, a flower, car, animal, book, etc and jot down words and phrases that could be used to describe them
  • Furniture – a large comfy sofa
  • Car – fast, expensive, colour
  • Flower – rose the smells, attracting insects
  • Animal – cheetah , lion, rabbit

Book– mystery, poetry, adventure

  1. As you extend you can begin to import phrases to elaborate.

My Mum

My mum is a comfy armchair that I can cuddle in when I’m feeling low.

She allows me to sink into her and share my deepest thoughts.

She is like a warm blanket on the coldest of nights.

She is an adventure story that unravels the mysteries of life with openness and sincerity.

She is a sweet smelling red  rose, but be careful she can be prickly at times!

She is a lioness, providing for her family needs day after day and  fiercely protecting them from harm.

She is a car cruising along, taking life one day at a time.

She is my adorable mother!

A poem like this uses metaphors and similes.  Please remember that poems do NOT have to rhyme.  Sometimes the most powerful poems are those without rhymes.

  1. I am often inspired by nature. I see a beautiful sunset and I am lost in wonder.

Find your self an image that inspires you. Ask yourself ‘Why does this touch my soul?
